Peter Broz

Houston born artist, Peter Broz, has been a member of BOX13 since December 2020. Peter has always had a found fondness for drawing since a very young age. In recent years Peter has been creating paintings and drawings that combine his interest in the natural world with his interest in the human figure and the human condition. Peter’s works are primarily 2-dimensional, in a variety of materials such as acrylic, ink, pencil, colored pencil, oil, watercolors and most recently digital art.

Peter Broz graduated from the University of Houston with a B.F.A in Studio Painting in 2014. Shortly after graduation Peter received the Juror’s award for the 2014 BIG SHOW at Lawndale. Peter has exhibited his work at several galleries in Houston including the Mariago Collective, Hardy and Nance, The Blaffer Museum and Archway Gallery.

After graduating from college, Peter worked as a custom furniture builder for two years.  Despite his artistic interests being primarily 2-Dimension, furniture design and woodworking has been another long-term passion, which is also deeply rooted in a reverence for the beauty of natural materials like wood.  Peter taught high school art in HISD for 4 years. In 2018 he began volunteering for The Woods Project, a local non-profit wilderness exploration and education program for disadvantaged students in Houston.

Artist Statement

Through my art, I wish to explore the relationship that exists between people and the natural world. This interest stems from how our modern lives, surrounded by concrete, roads and buildings can very easily lead us to feel a sense of disconnectedness from nature, while simultaneous feeling a desire to rekindle that connection.

For me the natural world is an endless playground for the mind. I’m especially interested in those aspects of nature that may easily go unnoticed, from lichens, small insects to plants that are often dismissed “weeds”. It all brings me a sense of connectedness to my environment.  It serves as a sanctuary and source of visual inspiration.

With these natural elements in mind, I seek to explore and portray the relationship people have with the natural world. Ultimately, we are all part of the earth’s fauna. I wish to explore the impacts nature has on the human condition and well as how humans impact nature. The human figure plays a role in much of my work. Depicting human subjects helps create a narrative between our species and the other organisms that we share our world with.

I work primarily in 2-D, in a variety of mediums; including colored pencil, acrylic, ink, watercolor, oil and digital.
