In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, “Let Us Not Forget” emerges as a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives to the relentless virus. Inspired by The Washington Post’s poignant article, “Faces of Death,” this project meticulously commemorates 75 individuals through the display of their names embroidered on masks, photographic portraits delicately placed in petri dishes, and heartfelt handwritten narratives.
As an enhancement to the archive, the juxtaposed digital collage titled Borders Dissolved into Rivers, encapsulates the exponential rate in fatalities across 16 nations, serving as a sobering reflection of the global impact of the crisis.
Via this meticulous exploration into these web-based archives, I aim to produce an installation where the series of components entice the viewer to always remember the faces, stories, and profound loss experienced during this unprecedented period in history.
Jennifer Greenwell
Driven by a deep yearning to infuse significance into everyday life, Jennifer Greenwell approaches her lens-based works as interpretive investigations into the way she translates daily experiences that linger in her mind. Drawing inspiration from individual interactions infused with broader socio-cultural issues, Jennifer utilizes her architectural background to construct personal archives or interpret and reconstruct existing ones in order to develop narratives that speak of the fragile nature of time’s passage and her strong desire to immortalize memories she fears would otherwise be forgotten.
Originally born in Mexico City, Jennifer Greenwell holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of South Florida and a BFA with a minor in Art History from Florida International University. Currently residing in Houston, Texas, her process-driven artworks have been displayed nationally and internationally, showcasing pieces that reflect upon the thoughtful analytical manner in which she visually reinterprets information.
In the end, her works speak to the complexities of human experiences as they are transformed into visual archives that entice the viewer to see life’s simple instances as worthy moments of remembrance, regardless of how important or inconsequential they may seem.
